On Feb. 11, 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers and won their 3rd Super Bowl, with a score of 26-22 in overtime. The Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes earned the title of Super Bowl MVP, which marks the 3rd time he has received this award. Not only was this the 4th Super Bowl win for the Chiefs, but it was also a back-to-back Super Bowl win, as the Chiefs also won last year’s Super Bowl. This marks the first time in 19 years that any NFL team has won the Super Bowl back to back. The Chiefs have also achieved the technical title for a “dynasty” with their most recent win, as they have won 3 different Super Bowls in the last 5 years – the 2020, 2023, and 2024 Super Bowls.
This Super Bowl was also the first time that the NFL has used their new overtime rules in a postseason game. The new rules dictate that 15 more minutes are put on the clock, then both teams get at least one possession in overtime, and if the score is still tied after both teams have gotten the ball, the next score wins the game. This new rule allowed fans to witness a phenomenal buzzer-stopping touchdown from Mecole Hardman and Mahomes, who achieved the game-winning touchdown with 3 seconds left on the clock – using almost all of the 15 minutes of overtime provided in order to secure the win.
The victory parade for the Chiefs will be held in front of Union Station at 12:45 PM. According to the Kansas City Sports Commission, the parade will last around one and a half hours. If you plan on attending the Chiefs victory parade, be sure to wear long sleeves, as the temperatures are projected to be in the 50s for the entire duration of the parade. Platte County Schools will not have classes or virtual learning on this day.
