The North Kansas City School District just recently experienced a school shooting on Saturday night at around 4:30 P.M. March 2, 2024. Administrators have said two people, an adult, and a North Kansas City High School student, were shot and taken to a hospital. The student is still unidentified and the adult who was shot is Kim Nakahodo, Deputy City Administrator.
The student was reported as an innocent bystander who was hit by a gunshot and was released from the hospital. It was said that they were recovering at home and the other victim (Nakahodo) was still receiving medical care in the hospital.
Currently, it’s unknown how many people were tied up in the shooting, no suspects have been released at the moment but officials are still investigating.
Link Weaver, a student from Northtown, was attending the basketball game during this incident.
“I was sitting in the bleachers on our school team side and was with friends, next thing you know I saw the Staley’s head coach run to the other coaches yelling there was an active shooter or that there was a shooter in the building. Everyone began to panic and started running and shoving each other which made me lose sight of my friends separating us. We were all running into classrooms and grabbing tables and desks to block the doors just in case something were to happen to us,” Weaver said. “We were all calling our parents because we were scared something was going to happen to us.”
Since then, students have received additional security and other counseling services for those in need. After that, there was a scheduled district championship game that followed on Tuesday but the game was moved to Winnetonka High School to allow students to heal and process what occurred last Saturday the district said in a social media post on Northtown’s News Instagram.
