Whether to wear gold or silver jewelry is a hard decision. One metal may be more appealing while the other compliments you more. Let’s learn the basics:
Silver jewelry is more accessible to buy. Most online jewelry stores offer more silver jewelry than gold. Not only is silver more abundant in different styles and designs, but it also costs less than gold. Even if the piece is gold plated or coated meaning, it is a different metal than gold just colored to look as if it were gold, it will still cost more than the silver piece 9 times out of 10.
Relative to a budget silver is more reasonable but that does not mean it will look the best on you.
Gold is best suited for warm undertones while silver is better for cool undertones. A good way to see what undertone you are is to color match with foundation. Foundation has very visible undertones. If you swatch the makeup on your skin until you find one that blends in and then look that foundation shade up it will tell you what its undertones are.
Gold is a warm color, close to yellow which is why it is best paired to those who have warm undertones. Most blondes will work with gold jewelry better than silver. The more yellow/gold a blonde’s hair is the better the jewelry will look. Yet, blondes can have an icy toner on their hair making them more white than yellow. Then, silver is the better option. Personally, I think all blondes should wear gold. Blonde hair is really the only hair color that plays a role in your jewelry, if you have brown, black, colored, etc… it will depend on your undertones.
Again gold=warm, silver=cool. Pink, yellow, and red undertones in your face will wear gold while those of light blue or purple will wear silver. More generalization of this is if you have tan skin you should wear gold jewelry compared to if you are pale you should wear silver. Yet, the exception to this is if you are a tanned brunette, then silver jewelry will look amazing.
If you love gold jewelry but silver matches your undertones or vice versa there are always things you could do. For example, you could self-tan so your skin is now more warm matched and gold will be more suitable. Or you could wear a cooler shade of blush to be more suitable for silver jewelry. That would mean changing from a pinker shade of blush to a more purple.
For special occasions, jewelry should match the outfit rather than the skin tones. If you are wearing a dress that has silver beading or sequins then you should wear silver jewelry to complement it even if you normally wear gold. My best advice is to dress well so your skin tones away well. You should not be wearing a dress that makes you change your jewelry because that would mean it does not compliment your skin tone which is so important.
There are a small few who have a neutral undertone. If that is you then both silver and gold will be suitable for you. This can also lead to mixing metals which is a fine line with distasteful. To wear both gold and silver jewelry at the same time can look very cool and pleasing or cheap. In this case less is more. When mixing metals use the following guidelines. All earrings should be one metal. Necklaces should be kept to a minimum of one or two. If two, one could be silver while the other gold, or both be the same metal. Bractelye and rings can be worn in abundance mixing silver and gold back and forth.
