Wicked came out Nov. 22, 2024, promotions and commercials helped the movie gain popularity and traction in the public, causing you to see it being promoted wherever you would go. Promotions for the movie started in October 2024 so after a full month of seeing promotion it started to get annoying from how much promotions you would see for the movie.
My favorite promotion that I saw was the partnership with Starbucks, with the creations such as the Elphaba cold brew and Glinda’s Pink Potion. The amount of promotion changed my feelings for the movie until I actually went to watch the movie in theaters.
So going into watching this movie I didn’t have any high expectations. I had gone over break with one of my close friends and her mom who my family is close with. But as I was watching Wicked I realized that the movie wasn’t actually over-hyped as I thought it was, the sound and visuals were great, and the costumes were gorgeous. I’ve never been into musicals or theater before so I honestly went into the movie thinking that I wasn’t really going to like the movie. I was wrong even though it was a musical, because of how hyped the movie was I already heard most of the songs that were sung in the movie which helped make the movie more enjoyable to watch. My favorite part of the movie was when Glinda and Elphaba actually started becoming friends and how Glinda would start teaching her ways to dress and act.
This was my favorite part of the movie because it really showed the bond that formed between the two after a rough start with each other. I really enjoyed seeing their friendship grow, along with seeing Glinda finally starting to be nice to Elphaba considering Glinda was very popular at Shiz and Elphaba was not due to her green skin.
It really started pulling pieces of the movie together considering I had never seen the musical before or had any background of the movie. And since this movie was only part one and the next part comes out this year in November a year after the first one I will definitely go watch it when it comes out in theaters. Everything about the movie was great, due to the dedication put into the making of the movie and all the behind the scenes.
One of the behind the scenes that I really liked was in the beginning when it overlooking all the part of Oz like Shiz University, Emerald city and more and show people walking on the yellow brick road and besides it showed a field of tulip which I learned were actually real a whole field of Tulips were planted for the movie. I really found that whole scene fascinating because the people walking on the yellow brick road really shows you how this whole story connects to the Wizard of Oz. I also found it fascinating how the director split the movies into part 1 and part 2 because the whole story is too long to put into one movie.
The movie Wicked had 10 Oscar nomination this year and they were:
-Cynthia Erivo nominated for best actress in leading role
-Ariana Grande nominated for best actress in a supporting role
– best picture
-best costume design
– best film editing (Myron Kerstein)
-best makeup and hairstyling (Frances Hannon, Laura Blount, Sarah Nuth)
-Original Score (John Powell and Stephen Schwartz)
-best production design
-best sound
-best visual effects
The Academy Award also known as the Oscars are awards for artistic excellence in film. 10 nominations for one movie is pretty impressive. The question is, how many will they actually win? Talking about awards Wicked won an award for Cinematic and Box office achievement at the Golden Globes. This really helps to prove that a lot of work was put into Wicked to make it such a good movie for it to have so many nominations. Even though I’ve never been into musicals I would say that Wicked is a really amazing movie that I would recommend to anyone!
