While every other grade was getting their beauty sleep over summer break, most seniors were hard at work preparing for the first day. Not just the perfect first day outfit or how they were going to do their hair, but the traditions they were getting ready to start and continue. On the first day of school, seniors arrived at the North Lot at 6:15 a.m., sporting “senior” jeans, kiddie backpacks, with digital cameras in hand. No two pairs of jeans looked the same, all having their own unique flair and showcasing student interests.
This trend in jeans has been seen across nearly all platforms at this point, with many going viral across social media, and becoming inspiration for other seniors to take after. While many decide to stick with their school’s colors, there is no bounds when it comes to how the jeans can be done.

“It took a fat minute honestly [to make the jeans],” senior Samantha Corey said. “But, I put the bow from Hello Kitty on top of the 26, so they matched my Hello Kitty backpack.”
A newer trend for seniors has also been kiddie backpacks, influenced mostly by childhood shows, games, and interests.
“I used to love Dora, so I got a Dora backpack,” senior Iman Elmi said. “It was pink and had pom-poms, it was just adorable.”
Some have decided to keep them year round, as for others they used them only for the first day of school because of their size. While some think the backpacks are too “childish”, many consider them a full circle moment, paying homage to their roots and things they once looked up to.
But these seniors needed a little sunrise to kick off the year. Beginning to trend at the start of each school year, senior sunrise is a gathering at dawn for seniors to come together and make memories. With custom frames and digital cameras, seniors came together after the scare of potential rain that morning and welcomed each other with smiles and laughter.

“I feel like it’s just so amazing to watch our class come together, like as a family,” Elmi said.
The senior class at Platte County hopes to continue on these positive notes, even after all the stressors that have come with the start of the school year (shoutout gasleak!). Some, though, may be left wondering, will we have more of these opportunities?
“100%, we do have some feisty, and ready to go seniors in our Stu-Co,” Elmi said. “Hoco hallway decorating is coming up Sept. 28, so be there or be square; One Last Disco.”
Elmi also shared that Stu-Co has some plans in the making exclusive to seniors, but cannot be disclosed at this time. All this done and said Pirates, there so much to look forward to this year as there are so many memories yet to be made.
