The Platte Country Pirates football team started the year with a winning streak. Their first game and victory was against longtime rival Kearney. The first home game was Friday, Sep. 1, the theme was “Neon Night” against Smithville. The final score was 43 to 38 with the Pirates pulling an exciting win over the Warriors in the last 30 seconds. Their second away game was against North Kansas City, which was a “white out” and the Pirates won again. The final score was 17 to nothing.

Coach Seifert thinks that It’s going to be challenging with a lot of tough games coming up to keep that winning streak, he’s taking steps and he believes that they can keep it.

“We’re going to have to compete at a very high level to go win those games,” said Seifert.

The stadium has been full of the Platte County’s student body cheering their team to victory. Sophomore Camila Zavala said the football players get hyped up when they hear the students cheering.

“Be there, Show out, Be loud. YEAH,” said Zavala as a command to her classmates.

Sophomore Adam Gisler, running back, believes the fans help them and are not just a distraction.

”Yes fans help, It makes the game more exciting.” said Gisler.

This shows that being there and supporting your team is a good use of time. It is fun for you and even helps your players win.

Due to their early season success, head coach Bill Utz was named coach of the week by the Kansas City Chiefs.

“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by the Kansas City Chiefs,” said Utz in a release from the Chiefs.

Coach Utz told them that he was winning because of his team and all of their hard work. He won the school a $500 grant and will also be given a Super Bowl coin along with a certificate of recognition. Utz along with the other winners is now qualified to win the Eric Driskell Coach of the Year Award which will be voted on later this Fall.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, last Friday, Sep. 15 they lost their winning streak to Grain Valley. The final score was 45 to 24.
