The homecoming dance is coming up on October 14th.
Searching for a dress is really stressful. Not knowing the right length, what is out of style, what you will look good in, and matching your date all play a factor in the pressure of finding the perfect dress. No need to worry I’m here to help.
As a girl who has been to 4 homecomings myself and has over 15 homecoming dresses in my closet, I am here to guide you. Let’s find your dress!
Homecoming dresses are meant to be short dresses. If you are shopping online these will be under the category of “Mini dresses” or “Short dresses” on almost every website. You do not want the dress to go past the middle of your thigh. If the dress goes past your middle thigh closer to your knee it will end up looking awkwardly long in pictures. Are you in love with the dress but it goes past this length guideline? Great, keep the dress. You can either hem the dress, fold the end of the dress under and use double-sided tape, or use safety pins to keep it up. Get a short dress, save long dresses and gowns for prom. It is embarrassing to wear a long dress to the homecoming dance, not eye-catching.
More casual dresses are in style this year. Think of a short dress you would wear to a graduation party or a picnic. More informal and less Sherri Hill. Cute dresses are being worn more than sultry dresses. This was a theme with last year’s prom as well.
Cupcake skirts, tulle dresses, sequins, and two-piece sets are never in style. Do not wear them.
Instead, look for a strapless dress with a corset top, backless, or feathers. Those are all in right now.
Think about how your body will look in a dress. Your body does not stop you from wearing what you want, do not let someone tell you to not wear a certain dress because of what your body looks like. But, you will still want to make sure that you are flattering your body and feeling confident. Which means you are going to look better in some styles than others. Look your best feel your best.
If you have blonde hair, a black dress will make your hair stand out more. If you are a brunette, yellow makes your hair pop. Take note of what the dress draws attention to when searching.
Jewelry depends on your undertone. Gold typically looks better on those with warmer undertones while silver looks better on those with cooler undertones. Find out what undertone you have by taking the test through the link provided above.
Satin dresses are no one’s friend. No matter how small or big you are your belly button will show through the dress and this will show up in your pictures. Satin dresses can be so cute though. If you’re going to wear one, wearing Spanx underneath your dress can help make sure your belly button does not show through. Also, if you sweat a lot, this will stain satin and show the rest of the night so be aware of that.
Different things to look for if you are insecure about your arms. Homecoming dresses with long sleeves are super cute. Even a one-sleeve dress can help with this insecurity. Stay away from strapless dresses. I never recommend wearing a cardigan though, let the dress stand out. Wearing your hair down will also help conceal your arms.
If you are insecure about your legs don’t change the length of the dress, change the length of the heel. The higher the heel the more toned your legs will look. A heel will change the way your calves and thighs will look.
If you are insecure about your chest, look for a corset top. A corset dress can make the top of the dress tighter therefore pushing your chest together and enhancing it. You could also size down in your dress if it is not a corset. This will also have the same effect, tighter and enhancing. A strapless style of dress can also suffice. It takes away your chest area completely.
Insecurities of your stomach can be eliminated by getting a flowy dress instead of a form-fitting. A form-fitting dress will show the size of your stomach. It is harder to hide your stomach when wearing tight-fitting clothes. Wearing a flowy dress conceals your stomach. Flowy not poofy. Poofy will make you look bigger.
Matching your date can be tricky. This is why it is important to get dressed sooner rather than later. So your date can match you. The date is supposed to match the dress, the dress is not supposed to match the date. You pick the dress, they have to match. But you also have to give them time to match.
A great way to make sure you will look uniform is to have your date tie/bow and shoes match the main color of your dress. If your dress is pink, their tie and shoes will be pink with a neutral suit. The date is meant to compliment you. If you look better next to white, your date should wear a white suit with a tie and shoes matching your dress. If you look better next to black then your date should wear a black suit.
If you have a multi-color dress, have your date wear the color on your dress that will make your eyes pop the most. For example, if my dress was a mix of green, blue, and white, I would have my date’s tie and shoes be green because that will make my eyes pop more.
Ultimately the dress you feel the most confident in, you will look the best in. Confidence is eye-catching.
