Taking place from December through February, some sports offer winter workouts to students who want a way to ease back into the season. With most of the workouts being conditioning, it offers a way for students to get into the correct mindset and shape, with many believing they are effective.
Senior Kaylin Hudson, who is training for soccer, gave an inside look into the workouts. “We team up with track, and we do running drills and stretches, and just keep going back and forth in reps.”
The workouts are Monday through Thursday, taking place after school and varying in the time that they end depending on the sport.
“I think it is helping me build my stamina and strength, I think everybody who is doing a spring sport should go to them.” Hudson added.
At winter workouts, there are two groups for track and field; sprinters and distance, one for baseball, and a late addition of soccer. With most season practices not starting until March, students interested in these sports are highly encouraged to attend the workouts.
Senior Alexia Myer, who is training for track and field, said, “Usually, depending on the day or the workout, I’ll work with either the sprint groups or distance,” mentioning how working with the different groups is beneficial to working different skills.
“Oh, definitely. It gives a good headstart and helps you build up muscle to prevent injury for your season,” Myer said.
But not only do these workouts help you get prepared for the season, but they also allow you to train next to some of your teammates for the upcoming season. Junior Zachary Brown, who is training for baseball, noted how the workouts not only help you prepare, but form some chemistry for the upcoming season.
“It definitely helps my body get ready for the season, but it also helps with forming a bond with the guys before the season starts. So yes, I think they are beneficial.”
