Senior Charley Sims accomplished her 100th career win in only her third year of wrestling. The accomplishment for the senior, making the achievement even sweeter, was that her 100th win came with winning districts and securing her spot for state. None of that would have come if her dad hadn’t forced her into wrestling.
“I think it’s really awesome, wrapping up my high school career, it’s nice to hit that milestone, and be able to finish on a good note,” Sims said. “100 wins is something everybody looks forward to, so being able to hit that milestone in three years is something [special].”
Sims is coach Reggie Burress’s second wrestler this year to reach 100 wins, so for that to happen is something special.
“She’s only wrestled three years, so getting that 100th win is big for her,” Burress said. “It’s just part of that growth and development to get to that level is just really big.”
Her 100th win had been on the radar for both her and her coaches.
“She knew that the district title was going to be her 100th win, so it had been on her radar and she was looking towards it,” coach Joe King said.
Last season, Sims did the math, and she realized she could hit 100 wins. “The goal really wasn’t get 100 wins, it was always place as well as I can at state.”
Since she won districts, it set her up well for the state tournament. The top four at districts qualify for state, and the winners of each district face the opposite-seeded opponent, meaning Sims has an advantage in the bracket to help her find success.
“Winning sets me up for a good seeding for state,” Sims said.
This week, the Platte County wrestling team made their way down to Columbia, Missouri, for the state tournament.
The state wrestlers include seniors Grant Fadler, Cole Johnson, and Cooper Hammontree, juniors Jack Johnson and Chase Hulett, and sophomore Jaxson Shute. For the girls, seniors Charley Sims and Gabriella Ciccarelli, freshmen Ava Blankenship and Ariel Humphreys were qualifiers.
The state tournament runs Feb. 27 and 28.
