There is no doubt that there is a lot of hype surrounding the 2026 World Cup. Lots of different countries and cultures coming to Kansas City, of all places, is something we haven’t seen before. This will be a great experience to learn new cultures and customs in other countries. There is no doubt that there is a lot of hype surrounding the 2026 World Cup. Lots of different countries and cultures coming to Kansas City, of all places, is something we haven’t seen before. This will be a great experience to learn new cultures and customs in other countries. One thing people might not acknowledge, however, is the cons that may come with all these new countries coming to KCMO.
The World Cup is expected to bring over double the population of Kansas City into the Metro area (expected intake of visitors is expected to be around 650,000 people). This provides lots of opportunities to make new friends, learn new cultures, and embrace the diversity of the world.
Some positives towards this will be the economy booming and the affordability of attending the games. When asked why students wanted the World Cup here, one sophomore said: “Because as a soccer fan, I have the opportunity to watch some great players if I can buy tickets and possibly see them around in Kansas City or other areas nearby.” Another pro is that small businesses will thrive, especially those that stay open later.
On the contrary, there are some downsides to this extreme population growth. One thing people might not consider is that prices might go up. With inflation already rising, the last thing we need is for demand to go even higher. Another factor is the traffic. Another issue with the World Cup coming to Kansas City is the culture shock that we may experience. Other nations might not be familiar with the rules of the U.S. and end up doing something that puts the country in a negative light.
There is also some controversy surrounding the 2026 World Cup song. The song chosen is “Lighter” by Jelly Roll and Carin Leon. It was made to be aimed to blend cultures. Since it was revealed this would be the anthem for the World Cup, fans all around the world have had mixed reviews about it. Some cite it as “AI-generated” or “soulless” as well as less upbeat.
Despite what some say, the World Cup is bound to at least be a little bit fun.
You might have noticed the large amounts of road work being done around the Kansas City area. Kansas City is doing this for the large amounts of traffic headed towards Kansas City. So, after the world cup, expect to drive on some smooth roads.
