The Treasures dance team competed at State on Feb. 28 and placed second in Jazz and fourth in Hip-Hop. This followed a season where they had a new coach, more new faces on the team and a required competition season.
“Our season was pretty different compared to last year. I personally like our new coach’s choreography style, and our team dynamic was definitely different, but not in a bad way. We had an amazing group of freshmen come in, and everyone worked really well together,” sophomore Violet Macumber said
They had many different routines this year. For their competitions the dance team had a Jazz routine and a Hip Hop routine. Some other routines are: Country Girl, Thumbs, Get Low, and their halftime routine which they performed with the band. Excluding their competition dances they would perform any of the other dances at school events or games.
Junior Sedonia Duane explains what the dance season is like and how it is split.
“The normal dance season has two parts to it. The first part is football season where we spend the summer and first semester learning sidelines and halftime and these practices are more relaxed and fun,” Duane said “The second part of our season is competition season and we spend months working hard on our routines making sure they look good.”
The normal dance team season is about 10 months. They have auditions late in the year and practice all through the summer until school starts. When school starts, they practice Monday through Thursday. Competition season starts after football season is over in the winter and is finished around February or early March. The team has a break for about a month and a half until tryouts.
They had some differences this season with a new coach and, according to Macumber, the changes were positive.
“We definitely had a lot more practice this year, and in a way, it felt like we were more involved in school events, rather than just coming out to dance and then leaving,” said Macumber
With their competition season it is similar to other types of performing arts competitions like Show Choir or Pride Band. The team goes to other schools or arenas and warm up and prepare as a team before the official warm up, perform and then watch the rest of the dancers until awards are announced.
The dance team is currently over for this year and tryouts will be at the end of April.
