With the different amount of clubs offered at PCHS such as theater, choir, gaming and more, this school year math club has been introduced. Since this club is new to PCHS, understanding what math club is about and how it runs has been important for recruiting members.
“We have extremely gifted students who aren’t always challenged to their capability in math club,” club sponsor Kristi Whitmer said. “We can go to different events and competitions where they can get extra curricula that aren’t offered here.”
The idea to start a math club came from the students after learning that Whitmer had sponsored one at Park Hill. They wrote the bylaws and have been working to recruit other. Most competitions are in the second semester so they really focused on the basics first semester in preparation. Competitions offer different levels to compete in such as algebra, for freshman or advanced math not even offered at Platte County.
Alongside Whitmer, it was seniors Annabel Beeman and Wren Wilkins who helped to write the bylaws and start the club.
“We get to make the club into what we want to be and choose what the club ends up doing,” Beeman. “A lot of us are excited since most attended competitions last year, we are all excited to participate again.”
Students have found interest in the club for a variety of reasons. It provides opportunities to build your resume, explore more about math, meet new people, and visit colleges through competitions.
“When we go for competitions, you get to see different campuses and what college is like, which is cool,” junior Karlee Riggs said. “The energy on the club is a very stereotypical nerdy math vibe [because] it’s currently the kids in the upper level math classes even though we have kids from lower level math classes.”
