The Winter Guard team first competed on Saturday, Feb. 3 and placed third overall. With a late start to the season due to the snow days at the beginning of January, they felt they did incredible.
“We only had like two weeks of practice before our first competition,” Mikayla Dimick said, one of the team’s senior color guard captains.
The late start also affected the costume delivery times. The team still needs costumes for their season but they should have them by the next competition.
“The theme is fun, funky, and fresh. [The costumes] are leotards and they’re pink, blue, and purple, and they’re like marbley,” said Dimick.
The team’s routine is to “Never Gonna Not Dance Again” by P!NK. Brooklyn Schmidt, color guard coach, picked this theme because she wanted this year’s show to be fun.
“The song is all about having fun despite the things going on around you,” Schmidt said.
She also wanted something that the group would love. She wanted something that would stick out so she chose colorful costumes.
“This show really fits the group we have,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt started being the color guard coach last year during marching band season. It had been her first year teaching color guard but not her first year being in color guard.
“I joined color guard my junior year of college. My decision to audition for [Drum Corps International] was last minute but I’m so glad I did it,” Schmidt said. “Since I received a callback, I got to go to California twice.”
The 2A team has four more competitions and works hard to beat the score they had before from each competition. Practices are every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday for two hours. While the school hadn’t given recognition to the team like they did all the other teams that competed in their separate events that weekend, they hope to get more support in their next competition.
