A study called “If ChatGPT can do it, where is my creativity? Generative AI boosts performance but diminishes experience in creative writing” which stated that Gen Ai helped with writing being more clear and concise, improving creativity and less time required. It was not intellectually straining or full of effort but not creatively fulfilling, enjoyable and morally they were questioning the Ai. The use of Generative Ai in creative pursuits is harmful to the actual humans who are creating art and the natural creativity and empathy expressed in art.1
By normalizing the use of Gen Ai, media is becoming homogenized because while Ai can be beneficial by giving ideas, but the broadness of those ideas are limited. Human creativity is much more varied as shown by the numerous different styles of art, literature and music we have at our fingertips.
Ai can be helpful when it comes to writing if you have writer’s block and don’t know how to get started. But it is easy to snowball into using Ai as a crutch for essay-writing and creative writing. Creative writing is an outlet for thoughts, ideas and a way to see the world.
Freshman Lucy Sosa said “I think it definitely quite easy to use it once as a tool for like then quickly go further with it, using it to do the whole thing.” Sosa is in the creative writing class with Vessar and she feels that it is easy for work to be misconstrued as Ai if it is phrased oddly or seems stilted.
Ai being used to create fanart, deepfakes or portraits and most people meet realistic art with suspicion. The default for some people is to assume Ai for art that is posted online that looks too real or too uncanny. Online and in person, creating art creates community and a shared interest. But when the prevalence of Ai in art becomes normal it negatively affects these spaces.
Sosa said “ It’s definitely hurt the community. It’s given a lot more negative feedback to people’s actual work while still pushing AI forward because people are willing to really look past anything if they like the concept.”
Overall, Generative Ai has its benefits and negatives. The effects on creativity and community by Gen Ai is negative because it is a tool that is very often abused. Its abilities to create ideas and help those who need it is very helpful but it is overshadowed by the negative of it.
