The Pride of Platte County Marching Band had its first competition and didn’t even get to perform. On Saturday, September 23rd, the Pride Band had a disappointing start to their season. With two delays caused by lightning storms and a tornado warning, the Blue Springs South competition ended unfulfilled.
“It was quite frustrating because we were all mentally prepared, finally, and then we didn’t get to like actually perform,” said junior section leader Quinn Duggan.
Frustration was a common feeling amongst band members as they went through the day waiting for something that didn’t even happen.
“When we were on the sideline, Kenny Hanson, who is the director of bands at Blue Springs South, he came running across the field and said ‘I’m sorry, due to lightning and the storm we can’t allow you to perform for the safety of the kids,’” says Dr. Matt Bonsignore, Director of Bands.
About ten minutes later Hanson had called to tell Bonsignore that there was no longer a delay but instead a cancellation of the festival.
“It was very frustrating to have to go back on the bus [to go home], you feel like you did all that hard work for nothing,” said senior drum major Amelia Kidd.
While this competition was extremely frustrating and disappointing, the Pride Band’s next competition was at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia and ended with third-place honors in finals.
